  • You are listening to Making It in The Toy Industry, episode number 172. Hey there, toy people, Azhelle Wade here and welcome back to another episode of the Toy Coach Podcast, making it in the Toy Industry. This is a weekly podcast brought to you by the toy coach.com. On April 5th, Alan Musk and a group of artificial intelligent experts and industry executives called for a six month pause in developing systems.

More powerful than open AI's. Newly launched G P T four in an open letter citing Potential Risks to Society. When I first heard that, I thought, well, of course this group wants first mover advantage, so they want everyone else to pause so they can catch up, claim their space, and develop their AI product.

Since then, I've seen AI tools added to almost all of the programs I use in my business. My posting scheduler for social media now has an AI caption generator. My online graphic design program has its own AI image generator. My video editing program is giving me AI prompts, and I'm a tech savvy, tech loving woman of the future.

And even I'm like, whoa, pump the brakes. I need a minute. Well, I've been planning to share more and more tools that can help you develop your toy and games faster. There are plenty of AI tools out there that I use with my clients that I've been meaning to share with you, but the tech is changing so much, and I've got other episodes planned around packaging and interview episodes.

I found myself overwhelmed with notes and insights to share. But recently within the AI communities that I'm a part of, I've come across something pretty new. So new that if you don't know Python, the programming language, which I don't it's hard to get access to. This is something that's so impressive that it's actually scary, this new AI tool out there is called Auto, G P T. Originally, this episode was planned to just do a mind map of AI to predict what it will mean for the toy industry in the future. by the end of this two part episode.

You my friend, are gonna learn what auto G p T is. I'm actually gonna walk you through an example doll line that I developed with its help and I'm gonna tell you how you can test out a beta version of it. So I'm gonna show you in this episode how you can use this AI combined with another AI I've talked about in the past to generate.

An idea, a business plan, and even a visual of that concept, which you could use for a Kickstarter. But most importantly, we're gonna dive into a mind map that I've created about ai. I've done mind maps before when the Covid pandemic was just happening, I did one for the shipping container crisis to predict what's gonna be important as we move forward and what isn't.

And my mind maps are always an attempt to predict how our toy world will be affected by this new major societal shift, but not just what it means for toys and games, but also our society in general. Because if we're selling to consumers or if we're selling to retailers, we've gotta know what's going on inside their head and in their everyday lives so we can make product and price points to match.

But first we gotta start out talking about this AI bot that I think we might actually need to be afraid of. So auto, G P T. What is it? Well, before I can explain what auto G p T is, you do have to know what chat G P T is. So in case you've been in a social media detox or you didn't catch any of my podcast episodes on AI in the past, let me give you a quick recap on what chat g p T is.

Chat. G P T is an artificial intelligence that is accessible by a web browser. It accesses data from across the web, which allows it to answer questions as simple as, how should I tell my overbearing boss that I need her to respect my boundaries to as complex as build me a business plan for opening a toy store in Seattle with $500,000.

The chat, G P t quote unquote experts out there, and I use that term loosely because the tech is still so new. But the experts out there will tell you that the most important part to getting chat G p T to do what you want is to feed it the right prompt, right? So that usually involves explaining the role you want it to play, the problem you want it to solve, and the conditions of that problem.

Now, this new AI auto G P T takes this whole AI thing to caprica levels. And if you didn't get that joke, it was a total nerd reference to the sci-fi drama spinoff of Battlestar Galactica. But Kaka shows how humanity first created these androids that would later turn against their human masters. That is how it feels as cool and useful as AI is. The biggest drawback of implementing chat G P T and many other AI bots into our daily tasks has been that someone else always has to do the button pushing the prompting. But that's not the case anymore because auto G p T has entered the chat.

Auto G P T is a variant of chat G P T developed by a company called Significant Gravitas and it uses the chat G P T AI to work. Now, if you remember from my earlier episodes it seems that many AI generators are using chat G P T as their found. Now if you haven't heard those other podcast episodes, go to the toy coach.com/ 1 58. That was the first episode on ai and then the toy coach.com/ 1 59. That was the second episode on ai and 1 59 specifically talks about chat, G p t Now auto, G P T. This new AI utilizes the chat G P T for api. I know like so many acronyms, what do they all mean? Don't worry about it, just know that specifically auto G P T utilizes G P T four, which is the latest iteration of open ai, state-of-the-art natural language processing model.

The horrifyingly beautiful magic of auto G P T is this, this is an AI that doesn't even need you to prompt it. What? Yes. Sort of kind of here's how with this ai, you can give a bought a goal and it will generate all of the prompts needed to execute that goal and within 30 fricking seconds it will start executing them.

Now, from this point, I could just explain the process of how you use it and how it works, but it will make more sense and be more impactful if I actually walk you through what happened when I got this AI to develop what it believes could be a multimillion dollar doll line. And it gave so much information that could very well.

Build out a Kickstarter based on this information. I know scared but intrigued. I can't look away, can't stop hitting generate. You guys are probably gonna feel the same. So accessing this auto G p T bot is the challenging part. For full access, you need an API key and apparently some knowledge of Python.

Hit me up if you have knowledge of Python, cuz I'm looking for some help. But through some digging, I was actually able to uncover a beta site that would allow me to test out the foundations of auto G P T without having all of that. And the beta site is called Agent G P T. So Agent G P T is a free to use beta app on the web.

Let me just quickly describe what it looks like. It's a, like a black screen. There is a window where the prompts come through, and in that window where the prompts come through, you can actually download an image of the prompts that were generated.

You can also download a PDF or you can just copy over all of the prompts that are generated. To the right of the window where the prompts are generated, there is a window called current tasks where it lists all of the tasks that it had worked on for you. Below all of that, there are two variable fields for you.

One is the name field, where you name your agent. And then the other is the goal field where you actually tell it. The goal, like you tell it what you want it to do. More on that in a little bit now. Agent G P T allows you to configure and deploy autonomous AI agents, that's what they call them.

You get to name your custom AI and have it embark on any goal imaginable. It will attempt to reach the goal by thinking of tasks to do, executing them and learning from the results. The platform is currently in beta and they are working on adding long-term memory, web browsing, interactions with websites and people.

We will get into that. That last part. We'll get into that. So now that you know, auto g p t is a version of chat g b t. This is a version that essentially prompts itself endlessly with new tasks based on a single goal that you provide and that this is the beta app that you're gonna be able to use and test out.

Let's get down to business. Let's get down to my new all-time favorite AI hobby designing toys with ai. thinking about our current budding toy industry trends, I started thinking about edgy products and how they are on the rise. Sparked by, the Wednesday Adam series. And by this new kind of messy and chaotic graphic trend that is growing edgy products, messy products are on the rise.

So thinking about that and. Thinking about a way to challenge this bot, I thought about why not have it develop something for the most challenging market to break into in the toy industry dolls. So I decided to put agent G P T to the test solving this problem. So the first goal I gave the AI was this quote, come up with a multimillion dollar line of edgy dolls that aren't too expensive to produce, but can be sold for $50 or more at retail.

End quote. The chatbot proceeded to give itself tasks to get that larger goal done. Now among all of its self-assigned tasks, were analyzing market trends and consumer preferences to determine the most popular doll themes and designs that fit the edgy criteria. The next task it gave itself was to research and source affordable, yet high quality materials and manufacturing processes that can produce the desired doll design at a low cost task.

Three, create a marketing strategy that effectively showcases the unique features of the dolls, and then task four that it gave itself. Remember, these are tasks that's giving itself, identify potential retailers and distributors who specialize in edgy and alternative fashion projects, and develop partnerships and distribution plans to ensure that the dolls are widely available and marketed effectively.

Now you might be thinking ael, surely this chat bot asked you if you wanted it to complete all of those tasks. But no it didn't. It signed itself a task and 30 seconds later completed it and then assigned itself another task and 30 seconds later completed it. This continued until I reached the limited amount of time that the beta chat bot can run.

And after that fourth task, it never completed that fourth task. It said, sorry, because this is a demo, we can't have our agents running for too long, and if you desire longer runs, you can provide your a p i key in the settings area and all that. So I was curious how many times it would run it, even though it couldn't run it long enough.

I thought, you know what, that's fine. I can keep running prompts to generate enough answers to finish developing this doll line.

And so I did, I believe I have essentially now a preliminary business plan for this doll line. So after that I thought, okay, what if maybe I need to get a little bit more specific because what I really want this AI to do is to generate ideas first. First I need the ideas.

So I set a goal of I need 100 ideas for this edgy fashion doll line. So it gave itself four tasks. One, to generate a list of popular fashion trends among teenagers. Two, to use natural language processing to identify edgy words, frequently used by teenagers. Three, to create a data set of existing edgy fashion dolls and their features.

Four, to use machine learning algorithms to generate 100 unique edgy fashion doll ideas. And then as an ai, it told me that it has analyzed the latest fashion trends among teenagers. And has come up with 26 ideas for an edgy fashion line. This included gothic fashion dolls with dark makeup and tattoos, neon colored dolls with bright hair and bold outfits.

Steampunk inspired dolls with elaborate Victorian era costumes, cyberpunk dolls with futuristic clothing and neon colored mohawks, bold prints and patterns on different dolls outfits, animal themed dolls with animal print, clothing and accessories, retro futuristic dolls with a fusion of past and present future clothing styles.

That one I actually kind of liked. After that, it added another task for itself. It said, I wanna use image recognition technology to analyze popular social media influencers and their fashion styles to generate new, edgy fashion ideas. So, okay. I wanna just pause here a little bit. This AI did some things or attempted to do some things that insinuated to me it was going to try to generate an image.

It did not generate an image. There were even points when it referred to its doll design as complete and tested, but it never provided me with a doll design. Now, if you've listened to my episode, episode 1 58, you know, we talked about Mid Journey, and that is an AI that can generate images, and we are gonna take some of the prompts from this AI and plug it into Mid journey and create the dolls that this AI is prompting.

I only bring this up because I do believe that this AI's plan is to also generate images. The website is already set up for that, where you can download images. From its prompt. Even though right now all it's giving is text, so it's only useful to really download text, but it does seem like it's going to do images.

The next, the, the next task it had given itself was to use natural language processing to identify edgy words, frequently used by teenagers. And then it said, after analyzing several sources of teen slang and language, the following list of edgy words are commonly used by teenagers, was generated 36 words.

It gave me savage lit swag, grunge, rebel, edgy, alternative, metalhead. A few words, I can't say on the podcast. Wild untamed. I'm actually surprised it doesn't have feral ferrell is a word, a trendy word right now that I see it doesn't have, so it makes me wonder. If it's really updated enough and, oh, hold on.

I'm sorry I didn't scroll down further enough. It actually gave me 73 edgy words, cryptic, enigmatic, obscure macab. It really went on and on, but they don't have Ferrell, which is interesting cuz it makes me wonder how recent the information they're pulling. From this point it decided it needed to focus on creating a data set of existing edgy fashion dolls and their features.

So this is where things get really interesting and specific to the toy industry. The chatbot says, after conducting extensive research on current edgy fashion dolls and their features, I've compiled a data set that includes the following dolls and their unique characteristics, and it calls out Monster High.

It says, these dolls are known for their monster inspired features, such as pointed ears, fangs, and colorful hair. Two brats. These dolls are characterized by their oversized heads and lips, bold fashioned choices and attitude. Three, my scene. These dolls are known for their trendy fashion choices and diverse ethnicities forever after high.

These dolls are inspired by fairy tales and depict characters with unique personalities and fashion styles. Five Winks Club. These dolls are based on a group of fairies and their magical world showcasing bright colors, wings, and other fantasy features. It didn't stop there, ladies and gentlemen. So, okay, before we go on, I gotta say, market research is a, is a part of the toy development process that is so important.

In my latest masterclass, the Foolish Mistakes that New Twain Game Creators make, I highlight this as one of the biggest mistakes that people make. They skip market research. The cool and crazy thing about this AI is not only that it told you you needed to do market research and then did it for you, is that it did the market research and pulled out the significant data points to what.

You were developing, so it knew you were developing an edgy fashion doll line, and no offense, no shade to Barbie, but it didn't pull Barbie into this data set, right? Not only did it pull the edgy brands, but it also told you what made those brands stand out so you could be aware and hyper-focus on, okay, monster highs focus on this.

Brats is all about the big heads and oversized, this oversized personality ever after high about fairy tales. So you can say, okay, this is what all these brands are about. What is gonna be my differentiating factor? It makes creating a SWOT analysis instantaneous. Okay. It didn't stop there. It said, based on this data set I, it's talking about itself in the first person and I can't, so, The AI said, and I quote, based on this data set, I generated 100 fresh and unique ideas for the edgy fashion doll line.

Please let me know if you would like me to proceed with sharing these ideas. Now, that is where I ran out of usage because it was a demo. It couldn't run for too long, but, you know, I didn't let it get away with that. So what I figured out to do with this ai, because it lists its specific tasks that it's going to execute.

Once it stopped running, I would copy the last task that it suggested it should run, and then pace that as a new. And run it again. So after that, I gave it the goal of use machine learning algorithms to analyze the data set of existing edgy fashion dolls and their features to generate new edgy fashion dolls ideas.

That was one of the tasks that it was going to do, but it just ran out cuz it's a a beta test version. So as soon as I gave it that it generated three tasks that it was gonna do. And interestingly enough, it started to get a little bit more human. It started to say greetings to me. It explained who it is and what it does as an ai.

And then it told me what it was gonna do and how it was gonna collect the data. And then it told me it was going to, after it collects the data and analyzes it, that it was gonna proactively generate the new edgy fashioned doll ideas. So eventually it did. All of that didn't show me any of its work, but it showed me the results.

So it said, Based on my analysis of the data set of existing edgy fashion dolls, I've generated several new edgy fashion doll ideas using machine learning algorithms such as clustering and regression. I. I, I can't. So then it says, here are some of the new edgy fashion doll ideas I have generated.

One, a doll with a punk rock theme featuring black leather clothing and heavy eye makeup. The doll can also come with accessories such as spiked bracelets and chokers. Two, a doll inspired by the gothic subculture with dark clothing featuring intricate lace details. And Victorian inspired accessories.

Three, a doll with grunge aesthetic featuring ripped jeans and oversight t-shirts. The doll's hair can also have a messy and unkempt appearance. Then it says these are just a few of the many new edgy fashioned dolls ideas that I've generated based on the dataset analysis. I believe these dolls have the potential to be very popular among collectors and enthusiasts of edgy.

So then it goes into adding a task for itself to create a prototype of each of the generated fashion dolls and to conduct user testing to determine market viability. And this is where I started to get freaked out because if earlier, as I mentioned, they are looking to connect this with website so that this AI can connect and talk to people.

Would it then just generate an image of a concept and start asking people online what they thought of it without my approval as the user? Any, I mean, just we, let's go. So then it says, based on the analysis results of the data set of existing edgy fashion dolls, they've generated the following ideas. So it went back to generating ideas and it named the ideas Gothic elegance, cyberpunk Princess, dark Angel Punk, ballerina.

And that's when I ran out of generations now. So I mean, this is a lot to take in, but if you're still with me, let's keep going. So one of the hardest things when coming up with a new toy or game idea is to make that toy or game idea align with current social and societal trends. Right? But also in the toy industry, they often talk about how you never know what product is gonna hit, right?

Everyone wants to create the you know, the tickle me Elmos of the world. Everyone wants to create the fidget spinner. Everybody wants to create the pop it, right? But we don't always know how to make that happen. And I believe it's because the toy industry tends to be led by two types of people.

It's led by creative designers who are passionate about character design and, and shapes and form. And it's also led by salespeople who are hyper focused on previous sales data and box sizes and price points foot traffic and click through rates. But the toy industry isn't so focused on the data of what toys worked.

It's always been talked about as a kind of like, you'll never know what's gonna be the hit toy. Everyone looks at their competitors and looks at what products work for them, and they try to emulate and create their own version. But there's not a, a lot of like data analysis that happens. Well, this AI seems like it could make that happen where you might be able to prompt this AI and say, Hey, as an example there is a mental health crisis happening right now and I need to come up with a multimillion dollar brand that could compete with Barbie, let's say that addresses mental health.

And if you get specific enough, this chatbot has the ability to analyze the data points of other doll lines and analyze the data points of mental and social emotional health and feed that all back to you as bullet points in seconds cutting out. What would be. Months of research, which would, by the time you conduct the research, maybe not even be accurate anymore.

Now, I know we're a little bit of ways away from that, but this has shown me that there is actually opportunity for us to be more responsive with the products that we bring into the world because the AI can allow us to problem solve instantaneously.

Okay, I wanna get into this a little bit more. So I prompted it with a task that it had given itself, but didn't finish because I'm limited on my usage, right? As a beta user. So I prompted it to research and analyze edgy fashion styles from different cultures and incorporate them into new, edgy fashion doll ideas.

That was its task it gave itself, right? So I just resent that task to it. And what's interesting is that it in, it looked at Gothic fashion, which originated in England in the 1980s. It looked at Harajuku fashion. It looked at punk fashion. It looked at hip hop fashion, which originated in the u in the United States, and it specified the colors and fit of those different types of fashion.

And then told itself to develop a framework for designing these ideas into a fashion doll. It went and broke apart the meaning of Kauai. It broke apart goth subculture for me. It explained punk subcultures, and at that point it ran out of abilities to generate more responses.

At this point say I was a designer. Okay. At this point say I was a designer and I got this prompt to create gothic inspired fashion for this new fashion idea. It's still a little vague, and I still might be wondering, is this on trend? I was able to ask this AI to analyze social media posts related to edgy fashion using hashtags and keywords, and analyze those posts to identify popular trends and opinions, and then use that to inspire ideas.

It found a bunch of edgy hashtags like hashtag edgy fashion. Hashtag alternative fashion, hashtag punk fashion. And then it an analyzed the post that those hashtags are associated with and said, here are some popular trends. Bold and statement accessories like chunky chains and hoop earrings, leather and vinyl clothing items like jackets and pants, edgy haircuts and styles like choppy bobs and shaved sides.

Dark and moody color palettes like black, red, and dark purple. And also incorporating punk and grunge elements. It gave me lists and lists of insights.

And then after doing that research, the trend research based on hashtags, it said, based on these trends, I've actually come up with a few new edgy fashioned doll. That's what it said. It said one a doll with a bold and vibrant hair color, dressed in an asymmetrical cut outfit with graphic prints and oversized accessories.

Two, a doll with platform shoes and a jumpsuit featuring bold patterns. And a statement belt three, a doll wearing an oversized denim jacket over a mini miniskirt and fishnet stockings. This AI is designing fashion. Now at this point, say you've got some inspiration.

You're a designer. Now you've got all this inspiration for a fashion line. Maybe you're gonna pop it into mid journey for more inspiration. I don't know how you like to live your life, but say this is your toy company. The next thing you need to do is figure out how your doll line is going to stand out from other people, essentially, how you're going to market it.

First we need a name, right? And I thought a major mist that people do when they come up with a name is they don't research whether the name is trademarked. Now, I don't know if this chatbot accurately did that, but I did ask it to come up with a un unique name for my edgy doll line that is not trademarked.

And it gave itself the task to generate a list of edgy and unique words to combine the words from the first task with doll related keywords to create potential names. And then the third task it gave itself was to check the potential names against trademark databases and eliminate any names that are already trademarked.

First it gave a list of edgy and unique words, vexa gloomy, Noxon shadowy. Then it combined those words with doll related keywords and came up with potential names, shadow dolls, midnight maidens, obsidian figurines, eclipse friends, Raven play things. And then it said that it researched and checked against trademark databases and that any that were already trademarked have been eliminated.

The remaining unique names it says, are ready for your consideration. If you're listening to this episode and you're getting ideas, still trademark, search those names. But that is what this can do for you. So the last bit. The last bit of this whole research process that I really wanna share with you is what it can do for your marketing planning.

Okay? So I thought, okay, I've got this great toy idea, but what do I do to market it? I wanna use social media influencers to do that. So I gave this chatbot a new prompt. I said, come up with a plan to reach out to influencers to promote my doll line and give me a list of influencers and tell me what to say to them and how to contact them. So it gave itself a bunch of tasks and eventually it identified eight influencers who have previously posted about dolls or toy brands.

But I quickly realized, I was like, oh, I forgot the word edgy, right? So I was like, okay, let me start again. Let's start again with the word edgy. So I said, give me a list of edgy influencers that would be interested in promoting my edgy doll line. This is where things got interesting. So it gave itself four tasks including scraping social media to find influencers with a focus on alternative fashion and edgier content.

It told itself to analyze the engagement rates and follow accounts of those potential influencers. It gave itself the task to reach out to selected influencers with personalized messages. And then it gave itself the task to evaluate the content of the pers potential influencers to ensure they align with the edgy aesthetic of the doll line.

Now, it did most of those things in one step, and then it, it said, based on my analysis, I've identified the following edgy influencers who would be interested in promoting your edgy doll line. And it gave me a list of influencers. It told me how many followers they had. They ranged from 80 K to 125 K followers, and it gave me their engagement.

Rate their engagement percentage rate from 6%, some of them to 9%. Some of them had crazy. Then it says, these influencers have a significant following with high engagement rates, making them effective partners for promoting your edgy doll line. Then it gave itself the task to send personalized messages to the identified influencers.

This is where I started to wonder, once this AI evolves, will it be just able to communicate with people? So you say, find these influencers and send them a note and tell them we wanna promote with them. Will it just do that? Now, what's really interesting is after running all of those tasks, the AI says that as an AI language model, it wasn't ethical or appropriate of it to provide a list of edgy influencers for promoting your edgy doll line.

So, What's interesting is it seems that it did something it shouldn't have done, but it did it so fast it couldn't really undo it. So it says that you should conduct your research differently. And then it says if you have a specific list of influencers in mind, I can help you craft personalized messages to introduce your edgy doll line and offer a partnership opportunity.

So that was interesting that it did it, and then it said, oh, we are not allowed to do that. So I said, okay, I want you to help craft a personalized message to introduce my edgy doll line. And then I listed one of the influencers that it recommended. So then the AI gave itself three tasks. One, to analyze the interest of that influencer. Two, to generate personalized messages that highlight the unique features of this doll line that doesn't even exist. Three, to recommend the best communication channels and timeframes for delivering the message.

It's telling me it's, it's researching the person's taste. It is creating a personalized message and then telling me when and where I should send that message. This is like the assistant that all solopreneurs have been waiting for. That's what this is.

Okay, so then it generated a message to send to this influencer. I'm gonna be honest, it wasn't great. The message really tried to sell her on the dolls rather than try to get her to represent our dolls as an influencer. But then it, to then it did analysis and said the best communication channel to deliver messages to this influencer would be Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

Wild. Okay. So that is as far as I took that developing of a million dollar doll line with. Agent G P T created as part of auto G P T. And the next step we're gonna do, just to finish out this developing of a toy product with AI, is take the prompts of the different doll brand ideas and put it into mid journey, which is the AI tool that will generate really high quality images and get mid journey to generate this doll line.

And that's where we're gonna stop today's episode. I know, I know you wanna keep diving in. I've got so much more to share with you. I hope you'll come back for next week's episode where I share what was generated from Mid Journey. And in next week's episode, that's also where you're going to find the information on how you can. Agent G p T for yourself and start playing around with it. And we're also gonna get into a mind map. A mind map to predict the future of ai.
